I moved on from particles for a while focussed on the group and Armillary machine. After a
lesson from Ewan about making efficient Particle effects I went back to sand fill particle system.
I learn't crucially information from this lesson, I created another texture sheet with longer more detailed particles. This mean the particle could be more efficient by using less particles and saving precious resources.
I also learnt that my textures could be grey scaled and the colours made to match in Unity using Multiply by tint feature. Was pretty happy with this result created something interesting still slightly cartoon to the now quality we where chasing. After this, I speed it animation up a little and remove the off center piece.
I started using just straight cubes for the rocks, I had tested using different shapes previously but they are so small the extra detail wasn't necessary.
-------------------------------------------------------
The textures I used for this can be seen below, the grey scale and multiplied versions. The bottom right is casting a shadow.
The Top Textures where my final, I went back to the old textures and refined the alpha more, added a gradient.
so many experiments
Finals, The frame rate is a lot lower for the gifs. Wasn't I wasn't able to achieve with the previous more efficient texture was a curve shape at all angles. This is sand is required to fill up a large pit and came from the wall so was important it billboarded and curved correctly what ever the players angle.
